
Bobotie (South African Minced Meat Casserole)

Ingredients
- —160 g ground chicken
- —1 small onion, finely chopped
- —1 clove garlic, minced
- —1 teaspoon curry powder
- —1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- —1 teaspoon lemon zest
- —1 tablespoon raisins (optional, only outside of strict MB phase)
- —1 teaspoon olive oil
- —Pepper and sea salt to taste
- —1 egg
- —70 g yogurt (full-fat, goat or sheep yogurt)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Heat the olive oil in a pan and gently sauté the onion and garlic.
- Add the ground chicken and cook until crumbly.
- Stir in the curry powder, turmeric, lemon zest, and optionally raisins.
- Season with pepper and salt.
- Transfer the meat mixture to a small ovenproof dish.
- Whisk the egg with the yogurt to create a light custard topping.
- Pour this over the meat mixture.
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until the topping is set and lightly golden.
Serving Tip
Warm, soft, aromatic, and surprisingly light. Serve with a refreshing cucumber and lemon salad for the perfect contrast to the warm bobotie flavors.
Storage Tip
Keeps for up to 2 days in the refrigerator; reheat in the oven for the best results.
